Thermography is especially appropriate for younger women between the ages of 30 & 50 whose denser breast tissue makes it more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions. This test can provide a “clinical marker” to the mammographer that a specific area of the breast needs particularly close examination.
The faster a malignant tumor grows, the more infrared radiation it generates. For younger women, results from a thermography screening can lead to earlier detection and ultimately longer life.
Angiogenesis, or new blood vessel formation, is necessary to sustain the growth of a tumor. Breast thermography can show these formations, and so detect the possibility of breast disease far earlier than a mammogram.

Breast thermography is a safe, painless, noninvasive test that takes only 15 minutes. It will alert you to subtle physiological changes that often accompany breast disease such as cancer, fibrocystic disease, infection, or vascular disease. The procedure may detect breast changes earlier than self examination, clinical examination or mammography. In fact, with Breast Thermography you may be able to detect breast disease up to 10 years earlier than with a mammogram!
Your thermography takes place in our specially designed room that insures your privacy during the procedure.
Thermography is a very sensitive and reliable way to graphically map and display temperature variations. In addition, Thermography allows us to evaluate, monitor, and document many injuries and conditions. These conditions include soft tissue injuries and sensory/autonomic nerve fiber dysfunction.
Also known as Medical Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI), Thermography’s value is in its sensitivity to detect pathology in the vascular, muscular, neural and skeletal systems. Therefore, this amazing technology gives the clinician a very clear picture of health or abnormality.
Thermography is very useful as a complementary procedure to other diagnostic modalities.
HOW THERMOGRAPHY WORKS
Thermography allows the technician to see changes in skin surface temperature. A scanning device converts infrared radiation into electrical impulses that are visualized in color on a monitor. Additionally, it graphically maps body temperature, and shows infrared radiation being emitted from the body surface. Since there is a high degree of thermal symmetry in healthy bodies, abnormal temperature differences are easily identified. Once the thermographic pictures are taken here at the center, our technicians send the images to Meditherm’s team of Physicians for interpretation. The Physicians at Meditherm then send the interpretation report back to our office within a few business days. This process is accurate, quick, and painless.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR THERMOGRAPHY APPOINTMENT
Do’s and Don’ts
Wear loose fitting clothes if possible.
Do not use lotions, deodorants or powder on the day of test.
Do not have physical therapy, massage, or electromyography on the same day thermography is performed
Do not come for a scan if you have a sunburn on your chest or the area of interest. Additionally, wait until all the sunburned area has peeled off.
Do not smoke for 2 hours before the test.
Stay out of strong sunlight on the day of the test.
Do not vigorously exercise 2 hours prior to the test.
There are no dietary or medication restrictions on the day of your scan, but do not drink hot or cold drinks prior to the test.
Is thermography safe?
Yes! Thermal imaging (thermography) uses no radiation or intravenous access and does not touch the body. The procedure is painless, completely safe and FDA approved. Infrared imaging does not replace any other form of imaging (e.g. CT, MRI, mammography), but is designed to be used in addition to other tests to provide physiological information that cannot be obtained from any other examination procedure.
Does Thermography replace mammograms?
Absolutely not! However, do mammograms replace thermography? The answer to this is also no. In fact, the two tests complement each other. Thermography is to be used in addition to mammography as part of regular breast health care.
Can Thermography detect problems with the stomach, colon, heart, immune system, female reproductive organs, prostate, and other internal organs?
The easy answer here is no. Thermography merely detects heat to a depth of 5mm beneath the surface of the body. As such, thermography cannot see into the skull, chest cavity, abdomen, or pelvic areas. If you are concerned about a possible internal disorder or the spread of cancer, there are tests and imaging technologies that are better suited for this purpose. Please get medical advice for the most appropriate tests for your condition.
What happens when I have a thermal scan taken?
A thermal scan takes approximately 10-45 minutes depending on which part of the body is being scanned. You will remove all jewelry and clothes from the part of the body being scanned (for full body scans you leave underpants on), and will be asked to wear a surgical gown. For a breast scan, you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up.
